A Case of Anomalous Horizontal Fissure and Hypoplastic Middle Lobe of the Right Lung International Journal of Morphology
Okamoto,Keishi; Wakebe,Tetsuaki; Saiki,Kazunobu; Manabe,Yoshitaka; Tsurumoto,Toshiyuki.
During dissection practice for medical students at Nagasaki University, a horizontal fissure and hypoplastic middle lobe were encountered in the right lung of an 81-year-old Japanese female. In a normal right lung, the horizontal fissure is situated anterior to the oblique fissure. On the contrary, in the present case, the horizontal fissure was situated posterior to the oblique fissure. We identified a small, additional lobe on the medial surface of this lung. It was situated in the medial part of the oblique fissure, and was determined to be a small hypoplastic middle lobe. As a result of the hypoplasia of the middle lobe, the original horizontal fissure may have disappeared from the anterior surface. The horizontal fissure, in this case, may be a...

A Classic Case of Annular Pancreas and its Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha; Mun Yooi,Ooi.
Annular pancreas is a rare developmental anomaly where the head of the pancreas surrounds the second part of the duodenum like a ring. This may cause the duodenal constriction, obstruction, peptic ulcers and other complications. We saw a classic case of annular pancreas. The head of pancreas surrounded the second part of duodenum completely. However there was no narrowing of the duodenum. The case may be of importance for gastroenterologists, surgeons and radiologists.

A Study on the Variations of Size, Shape and External Features of the Spleen in South Indian Population International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha; Somayaji,S. N; Soumya,K. V.
The spleen is the largest lymphoid organ. It is wedge shaped and measures about 1 inch thick, 3 inches broad and 5 inches long. It presents characteristic notches on its superior margin and has a hilum on the visceral surface. The aim was to study the anomalies related to size, shape and external features of the spleen and discuss their clinical importance. As there are not many reports on variations in size shape and features of spleen in the South Indian population, we decided to do this study on cadaveric specimens. We observed 50 spleens fixed with 10% formalin. Among the 50 spleens observed, 25 spleens (50%) were normal and had all the features explained in the textbooks. 25 spleens (50%) did not have any notches on the superior margin, 2 spleens (4%)...

Anomalias e patologias dentárias em Arctocephalus G. Saint-Hilaire & Cuvier (Pinnipedia, Otariidae) da costa do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Drehmer,César Jaeger; Ferigolo,Jorge.
The studied species were Arctocephalus australis (Zimmermann, 1783) and Arctocephalus tropicalis (Gray, 1872), (five specimens of each one). Anomalies were discussed under the light of theories which relate the ancestry of pinnipeds with the Ursidae; as well as concerning the evolutionary trends supposed for the Otariidae. Pathologies were related to alimentary and reproductive habits.

Anomalous Lobar Pattern of Right Lung: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Modgil,Vishal; Das,Srijit; Suri,Rajesh.
The right lung classically has two fissures, an oblique and a horizontal, dividing it into three lobes namely the superior, middle and lower. The anomaly of the lobar pattern has been described by many research workers on CT scans, where as, there are fewer studies on gross anatomical specimens. In the present case , which was incidentally detected, we report three fissures dividing the right lung into four lobes. Such abnormal fissures and lobes are clinically important for identifying broncho-pulmonary segments. Anatomical knowledge of anomalies of fissures and lobes of lungs may be important for surgeons performing lobectomies, radiologists interpreting X ray and CT scans and also of academic interest to all medical personnel

Bilateral anomaly in the style of Micropygomyia schreiberi (Martins, Falcão & Silva) (Diptera, Psychodidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Andrade Filho,José Dilermando; Carvalho,Gustavo Mayr de Lima; Saraiva,Lara; Falcão,Alda Lima.
This paper presents a specimen of phlebotomine sand fly with a bilateral anomaly in the style. Although such anomaly be rare in this group of insects, it may cause confusion in taxonomic identification and even lead to description of new species, increasing the number of synonymies. The specimen was measured and compared with the holotype and four paratypes of Micropygomyia schreiberi (Martins, Falcão & Silva, 1975) and confirmed that it belongs, in fact, to this species.

Developmental Anomalies of Bronchial Tree: A Multidetector Computerized Tomography Study International Journal of Morphology
Ulusoy,Mahinur; Kivrak,Ali Sami; Uysal,Ismihan Ilknur; Karabulut,Ahmet Kagan; Paksoy,Yahya; Fazliogullari,Zeliha.
Anomalies of the bronchial tree may cause recurrent acute pulmonary infection and persistent obstruction symptoms. The developmental anomalies of the bronchial tree were presented mostly as case reports with an accompanying anomaly. However in this study, these anomalies were detected in multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) images which have no reported pathology. Thoracic MDCT images of 400 patients (0-74 years old, 224 male and 176 female) were evaluated. Four tracheal bronchus (1%) were detected. Three of them were displaced type, one of them was pig bronchus. And two accessory cardiac bronchus (0,5%) originated from medial wall of the intermediate bronchus were detected. According to our findings, incidence of tracheal bronchus and accessory...

Multiple Vascular Anomalies in the Abdomen: A Gross Anatomical Study International Journal of Morphology
Jacob,Tony; Modgil,Vishal; Rana,Kum Kum; Das,Srijit.
Knowledge of the branching pattern of the abdominal aorta is clinically important for any abdominal surgeon operating on parts of the gut or neighboring structures like the suprarenals, spleen, pancreas, liver, kidneys and uréter. The presence of abnormal inferior phrenic artery associated with aberrant branch from the celiac trunk supplying the pancreas and duodenum is a rare anomaly. In the present case, we observed four branches of the celiac artery i.e. (a) left gastric artery (b) common hepatic artery (c) splenic artery and (d) an aberrant branch, which took a course inferiorly towards the pancreas. The aberrant artery supplied the body of the pancreas and gave a branch which supplied the horizontal part of the duodenum and then entered the transverse...

Pre-aortic Inter-azygos Veins: Two Case Reports International Journal of Morphology
Ntombela,N. S; Lazarus,L; Satyapal,K. S.
This report describes two cases of multiple anomalies associated with the azygos venous system. In Case 1, the hemiazygos vein drained the 9th to 11th left posterior intercostal veins. At T9 vertebral level, the interazygos vein passed obliquely and anterior to the aorta to drain into the azygos vein on the right. In Case 2, the common venous trunk formed by the accessory hemiazygos and hemiazygos veins passed anterior to the aorta to drain into the azygos vein at T9 vertebral level. These findings represent pre-aortic inter-azygos veins, which is a rare variation of the azygos venous system. Pre-aortic inter-azygos veins can mimic pathologies such as enlarged lymph nodes, tumors and aneurysms leading to misinterpretation of radiographs, computerized...

Species-specific differences in diatom-induced anomalies in calanoid copepod embryogenesis: are they linked to the stock-piled antioxidants? IBSS Repository
Khanaychenko, A. N..
Egg production and viability of co-occurring in nature copepods, Calanus helgolandicus and Calanoides carinatus, fed diatom, Thalassiosira rotula, and then switched to dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum, were compared in experimental conditions. Egg production of both species on diatom diet was similar (up to 17-22 eggs.female-1.d-1) but no viable nauplii were observed. Development was arrested at different stages depending on degree of anomalies. Abnormal embryos displayed various degrees of deteriorations in pigment distribution and organization of extracellular matrix. Reproductive responses of C.carinatus both to negative (diatom) and positive (dinoflagellate) diets were postponed in comparison with quick responses of C.helgolandicus. After 3 days of...

Two new records of Gynandromorphs in Xylocopa (Hymenoptera, Apidae s.l.) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Almeida,Rony Peterson Santos; Leite,Luis Anderson Ribeiro; Ramos,Kelli dos Santos.
Abstract Two new records of gynandromorphs in Xylocopa Latreille, 1802 (Hymenoptera, Apidae). Gynandromorphs are deviant morphological individuals with genetically distinct male and female tissues. Records of sex anomalies seems to be important to better understand the mechanisms regulating phenotypic expression. Herein, two new cases of gynandromorphs in carpenter bee species of Xylocopa from Brazil are described and figured: a mixed gynandromorph of the X. (Neoxylocopa) brasilianorum (Linnaeus, 1767) from São Paulo and a bilateral gynandromorph of the X. (Neoxylocopa) ordinaria Smith, 1874 from Sergipe.

Unilateral Quadripartite Composition of Pectoral Major Muscle: Anatomical Description and Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Dhuria,Ruchi; Mehta,Vandana; Loh,Hitendra; Arora,Jyoti; Roy,Sanchita; Suri,Rajesh; Rath,Gayatri.
A unilateral anomalous disposition of the muscular slips of pectoralis major was observed in an adult male cadaver during routine gross anatomy teaching session. The pectoralis major muscle displayed unusual configuration and comprised of four parts delineated by three intramuscular clefts. Further, the sternocostal part was found to divide into two fasciculi. The origin and insertion of pectoralis major muscle was as usual and unremarkable. Interestingly, the innervation of the muscle was observed to bear an important variation. The clavicular and sternocostal slips of pectoralis major muscle received a direct branch from the lateral cord of brachial plexus in addition to its usual innervation from the lateral and medial pectoral nerves. The multiplicity...

Variations in the gonostyle of Nyssomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva) (Diptera: Psychodidae) Neotropical Entomology
Pinto,Israel S; Santos,Claudiney B; Ferreira,Adelson L; Falqueto,Aloísio.
This paper describes sand flies similar to Nyssomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva) with variations in the number of spines at the gonostyle and tests the hypothesis whether these specimens belong or not to N. intermedia species. Using Principal Component Analysis and Neighbour Joining, the measurements of 15 structures of the phlebotomine with variations in number of spines were compared with measurements of 30 sand flies of N. intermedia species. Both analyses didn't cluster the specimens with variation in spines number in one group and provided evidence to the hypothesis that those sand flies belong to N. intermedia.
